Ritratto di un Presidente degli Stati Uniti, a partire da George Washington, che può essere sia volto a destra, che a sinistra, che di fronte. In alto il suo nome, in basso gli anni in cui ha esercitato il suo mandato e il numero progressivo dello stesso (1st President, 2nd President, ecc.). Dal 2009, in basso, prima del numero del mandato, compare il motto IN GOD WE TRUST, che in precedenza era sul contorno, dove, al suo posto, vengono incise 13 stelle. Statua della Libertà, nel giro UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, al centro il valore, $ 1. Il rovescio, uguale in tutte le emissioni, è opera di Don Everhart, mentre per il dritto si sono alternati diversi artisti.
A seguito del successo ottenuto con gli "State Quarters", 50 monete diverse da un quarto di dollaro dedicate ai 50 Stati che attualmente compongono l'Unione, il Tesoro americano ha varato un'iniziativa analoga per le monete da 1 dollaro. Lo scopo di fondo è lo stesso già tentato, e fallito, con i "Susan B. Anthony" e i "Sacagawea": convincere gli americani a utilizzare la moneta metallica al posto della banconota da 1 dollaro.

Il programma ha avuto inizio il 1° gennaio 2007, e prevede che ogni anno siano coniate 4 diverse monete da 1 dollaro, ognuna delle quali onora un diverso Presidente degli Stati Uniti, partendo da George Washington e facendo seguire tutti gli altri in ordine di mandato. Le emissioni termineranno nel 2016, e al momento l'ultimo Presidente ad essere celebrato dovrebbe essere Ronald Reagan. Il programma prevede infatti di inserire tutti i Presidenti deceduti entro i due anni precedenti la fine del programma stesso, ovvero entro il 2014. La presenza di Reagan non sembra però del tutto certa, poiché il suo predecessore, Jimmy Carter, è ancora in vita, e verrebbe quindi a crearsi un vuoto nella sequenza numerica, passando da Gerald Ford, 38° Presidente, a Ronald Reagan, 40°.

Il rovescio delle monete, uguale in tutte le emissioni, mostra un'inedita Statua della Libertà, disegnata da Don Everhart, mentre per i ritratti del dritto si sono alternati, e continueranno ad alternarsi, diversi artisti.

Lo scopo principale del "Presidential $1 Coin Program" (questo il nome ufficiale dato dalla US Mint) sembra però già fallito. Nel 2011, preso atto che nei caveau erano ancora stoccate monete fior di conio (quindi mai distribuite) per circa 1,4 miliardi di dollari, il Tesoro ha deciso di sospendere la produzione per la circolazione. Dal 2012 le monete sono coniate solo per i collezionisti, con una drastica riduzione delle tirature, e si presume che sarà cosí fino al termine del programma.

I "Presidential Dollars" sono coniati con finitura standard nelle zecche di Denver e Philadelphia, e con finitura "proof" (fondo specchio) nella Zecca di San Francisco.
